Sources: Three petitions for clemency. The first is brief one from his wife, and a second is a counter-petition from local inhabitants, urging that Richard be transported. However, it is the third petition which is of most interest. This is from Richard's grandfather, and outlines in some detail a military skirmish in which he (grandfather) took part in in 1779. He claims the King afterwards offered him any assistance, and he was now calling in that favour. It gives his age, number of children, where Richard was being held, and other information
